Airtight containers or sealer bags

Let’s discuss which one is better and what should you use for what type of food when it comes to freezing and storage of your leftovers. Here are the pros and cons for each.

Airtight containers

Pros:

Sturdy and Reusable: Airtight containers, especially glass or heavy-duty plastic, are durable and can be used multiple times. They’re also microwavable and dishwasher-safe, making them convenient for reheating leftovers.

Good for Liquids: Containers are better suited for items like soups, stews, or gravy, without risk of spillage.

Easy to Organize: They stack neatly in the freezer and allow for easy identification and access. You can label each container with the date, which is especially useful for tracking what needs to be used up first.

No Plastic Waste: Containers, especially glass, are environmentally friendly since you can reuse them many times.

Cons:

Bulkier: They can take up more space in the freezer.

Less Flexible: Containers don’t conform to the shape of the food as well as bags do, so you might end up with more wasted space or air in the container.

Sealer Bags

Pros:

Space-Saving: Sealer bags, particularly vacuum-sealed bags, are great for saving space in the freezer because they mold to the shape of the food.

Keeps Food Fresher Longer: Vacuum sealing removes air from the bag, which reduces the chance of freezer burn. It’s ideal for long-term storage.

Lightweight and Flexible: These bags are flexible and take up less space, making them ideal for smaller leftovers or when you’re trying to store a large volume of food.

Cons:

Single-Use (Mostly): While some bags are reusable, frequent reuse can compromise their integrity.

Requires Equipment: Vacuum sealer bags need a vacuum sealer for optimal performance, which adds cost.

Environmental Impact: Generates more waste unless biodegradable or reusable options are used.

For most households, a combination of both provides the best flexibility, allowing you to match the storage method to the type of food and its storage duration.
